Donald Trump may invite populist rightwing leaders from Europe such as Italy’s Giorgia Meloni and Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán to the White House before Keir Starmer, senior UK diplomats believe.
Downing Street and the Foreign Office are eagerly pressing for the prime minister to be at the head of the traditional “beauty parade” of overseas leaders who are called to see the new president in the days after the inauguration on 20 January. UK News: Campaigners claim no progress made with government on implementing recommendations until Elon Musk row
Campaigners met government officials months ago to urge them to implement recommendations from the independent inquiry into child sexual abuse (IICSA) in England and Wales, but said no progress had been made until recent days.
One campaigner who was present at the meeting with Home Office officials in September to ask why the recommendations had not been implemented accused the government of a “kneejerk reaction” and said it had been pushed into action by the political storm sparked by Elon Musk’s posts on X about grooming gangs. “We’ve been trying to get the government interested in implementing the recommendations for months and, lo and behold, Elon Musk turns up and something happens,” they said. Deloitte and BDO data underlines sharpest fall in employment expectations since Covid pandemic
Business leaders plan to cut costs and rein in hiring in response to government tax increases set out in the autumn budget, with employment expectations taking the sharpest tumble since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
A net two-thirds of finance directors said they did not expect to increase hiring levels this year, a four-year high, with a net 26% feeling more pessimistic about the prospects for their business than three months ago, the first time sentiment had slipped into negative territory in 18 months, according to the latest survey by the accountancy firm Deloitte. Victims are being “let down time and time again” by police, a minister has said, as almost every violent or sexual offence went unsolved in hundreds of Britain’s crime hotspots last year.
